PAUL WRIGHT, M.D., was drawn to medicine when he realized how much he enjoyed caring for people. He recounts his early thoughts on becoming a physician, sharing, “I enjoyed medical science—it was interesting, but it was the people I met and helped that really drew me to a career in medicine.”
And so began Dr. Wright’s medical career. He graduated from medical school at UT Southwestern and completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Houston. During his residency, Dr. Wright completed three rotations in Gastroenterology and immediately knew it was the right sub-specialty for him. He was invited by his esteemed mentor to a fellowship specializing in Gastroenterology at the University of Houston, which he completed in 1988.
For nearly 30 years, Dr. Wright has been in private practice in Dallas. He is a member of the American Gastroenterology Association and Board Certified in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine. Throughout his career he has been a voice for colon cancer prevention, donating his time and expertise to educating hospital staff and other medical professionals on gastrointestinal health.
When Dr. Wright can find spare time in his busy schedule, he travels the globe, spending time in South America, Asia, and making frequent visits to his favorite destination, Italy. Dr. Wright is fluent in Italian and Spanish, allowing him to fully immerse in the culture and spirit of many of the countries he visits. In his daily life, Dr. Wright enjoys road cycling and running. He has been known to participate in 10K and half marathon events around the Metroplex.
Dr. Wright’s passion for people that sparked his career is still his favorite thing about being a doctor. When asked what he loves the most about his job, Dr. Wright says, “I love the different patients I work with every day—striving to open up clear lines of communication about how to meet each individual’s health needs.” He goes on to express how no two people are alike, meaning their healthcare isn’t either. “[Each patient and I] have to work together, listen to one another, and in a short office visit ensure we have a mutual understanding of the treatment plan designed to meet their needs, goals and lifestyle. It can be a challenging, but also quite rewarding.”
Dr. Wright stays on the cutting edge of medicine, always investigating the ever-evolving research into the therapeutic interventions for gastrointestinal health, as well as diseases and conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s and colitis. He says, “I always stay current on the latest research—new findings are helping more people live better every day.”
